Common Toilet Repairs
Here are some simple, common toilet repairs required in most homes: If your toilet sounds like it is making sounds from a horror movie, and keeps you awake when it moans every night, just buy a new valve. If your toilet starts to fill spontaneously for no reason, runs for five or ten seconds and then stops, you either have a leaking ‘flapper’ or a refill tube that is too long for your toilet. Newer fill valves have a clip to hold the end of the water line up so that the water will stay in the tank and not leak or drain out, causing the tank to refill. If your toilet flushes too long or flushes more than once when you press the handle, adjust the float on the fill value to drop the water level by an inch. If that doesn’t work, drop the level again. Eventually



you will find the right level to control the flush in a more accurate manner. If your toilet does not complete the flush cycle, you may have a flopping flapper valve! Adjust the chain on the valve one link at a time until you find the right level. If your toilet makes a strange whistling noise when the tank is filling, you need to get a new fill valve (one that does not close as slowly as the old ones). If the level of water in the toilet bowl drops for no apparent reason, you may either have a clog in the line or you may have a crack in the toilet, which is causing water to leak or siphon off. If your toilet rocks when you sit on it, or if there is moisture or water around the base of the toilet, the grout and seal between the toilet and floor should be replaced.
